The Modelo 790 código 012 is the fee receipt required for TIE renewal. You cannot attend your extranjería appointment without it. Here's the full process — it takes about 20 minutes.
What is the Modelo 790 código 012?
It's a government tax form (tasa) used to pay the fee for issuing or renewing a Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero. The fee is approximately €16 and goes to the Spanish Treasury.
Código 012 specifically covers TIE cards. There are other códigos (011, 013, etc.) for different immigration documents — make sure you're using 012.
Step 1 — Generate the form online
Go to the official form generator:

You do not need a digital certificate or Cl@ve to access this page — it's publicly available.
On the page:
1. Select 012 from the código dropdown
2. Enter your personal details:
- NIF/NIE (your Spanish identity number)
- Full name (exactly as on your passport)
- Current address in Spain
3. Select the reason: Renovación de tarjeta de identidad de extranjero
4. The amount (around €16) fills in automatically
5. Click Generar impreso (generate form)
6. Print the PDF — you need the physical paper for the bank
Print at least two copies in case one gets damaged.
Step 2 — Pay at a bank branch
Take the printed Modelo 790 to any bank branch. Common options:
- BBVA
- Santander
- CaixaBank
- Bankia / CaixaBank (now merged)
- Sabadell
Important: Go to the teller window (caja), not the ATM. The teller stamps your form as proof of payment. The ATM cannot do this.
Tell them: "Quiero pagar el Modelo 790." Hand over the form and pay by card or cash. The bank does not charge a fee for this.
The teller returns the stamped form to you. This stamped form is your proof of payment — do not lose it.
Can I pay online?
Some provinces now accept payment via the AEAT online payment system, but acceptance is inconsistent — some extranjería offices will only accept the bank-stamped paper version. Unless your province's website explicitly confirms online payment is accepted, pay at the bank.
What to do with the form after paying
Bring the bank-stamped Modelo 790 to your extranjería appointment. The officer will take it. Bring a photocopy as well — some offices keep the original and return the copy, others keep both.
Common mistakes
Wrong código — double-check you selected 012. If you used a different code by mistake, the form will be rejected.
Paying at the ATM — ATMs don't stamp the form. The extranjería requires a bank-stamped paper receipt, not an online confirmation.
Name doesn't match passport — enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport, including any accent marks. Discrepancies cause problems at the appointment.
Losing the stamped receipt — if you lose the stamped form, you'll need to pay again (there's no way to get a duplicate stamp from the bank). Keep it safe with your other appointment documents.
How long is the Modelo 790 valid?
The Modelo 790 doesn't have a stated expiry date, but most extranjería offices expect it to be recent — paid within the same application period. Don't pay months in advance and then rebook.
